New Segment: Deadbeat Chronicles

If you’re one of the roughly 700 people who find your way to WBTK each month, first, thank you! Second, you’ll notice that it’s been dead. It’s been stale. It’s been weak. Frankly, I’ve been a deadbeat. It’s time to atone.

A touch over a year ago, I posted a review of a truck on TTAG. The ownership of the site at the time took exception. I had promised a thorough review of the truck in question to a very kind local dealer who loaned it to me so I could take a one legged veteran to his first precision shooting competition. Ownership felt it didn’t fit the brand of TTAG. I was given the choice – file the article to the round bin and keep my gig or run it and have it be my “swan song.” I chose the latter and found myself without an outlet for the first time in 5 years.

Four months later, our son joined the family and my ability to review and write was quickly shelved in favor of sleep and survival. On Feb 13, I returned to my day job after an extended leave to spend time with my new family and was promptly laid off along with about 100 others. I found myself without a job for the first time in 8 years.

As a single income household, it was up to me to get out there and go find a new job. And a new job I found! I found a great day job with a fantastic company that’s kept me quite busy since I started at the end of March. Oh, we also relocated from Austin to Houston.

In summary, the last 13 months have seen the loss of my side hustle as a writer, the loss of my primary hustle as a technology specialist, the addition of a son, the purchase of a home, and a new job. For those keeping track, the three most stressful things for a marriage are a new home purchase, a new baby, and a new job. Luckily, I married my best friend and all is well.

Which brings me to my deadbeat status. I had a decent amount of gear waiting to be reviewed when TTAG and I parted ways in May 2017. Much of it moved to other writers, but some followed me around for a variety of reasons. And due to the aforementioned reasons, the reviews never came. And frankly, that’s wrong. So here’s a list of what’s outstanding. I’ll be working through it as I clear my conscience.
